Advocate Bethany Community Health Fund Capacity-building Initiative for Nonprofit Organizations 2012
The Advocate Bethany Community Health Fund is piloting a new initiative that will assist the Bethany Fund's current efforts to address the capacity-building and technical-assistance needs of some of its current organizations. The Bethany Fund Board and staff believe that effective grantmaking in the Bethany Fund Communities involves more than the awarding of program dollars to grantees. The Bethany Fund Capacity-building Initiative for Nonprofit Organizations seeks to provide individualized capacity-building support designed to help build, strengthen and expand the infrastructures of current grantee organizations.
Through this initiative, organizations that are current Bethany Fund grantees will receive individualized technical-assistance services over the grant term. These services are aimed at supporting grantees' efforts to deliver more effective services to clients and making organizational changes that will have a positive impact upon their organization's long-term stability.
The Bethany Fund offers the following types of technical assistance and capacity-building support:
One-on-One Technical Assistance The Bethany Fund contracts with not-for-profit capacity-building organizations and experts to provide intensive coaching to grantee organizations. Select grantees are provided with one-on-one assistance, coaching and support in areas including board development, fundraising, strategic planning, budgeting, program development and marketing. These services are provided over the course of several months throughout the one-year grant period. The goal of this effort is to create overall stronger organizations.
Professional-development Workshops
Grant writing In addition to the professional-development workshops that are offered to both grantee and non-grantee organizations, the Bethany Fund offers more intensive support to its grantees. Currently, the Bethany Fund offers an intensive grant-writing course that meets over a four-week period. During this course, grantees take a deep dive into the writing process and participate in peer review, one-on-one mentoring, and follow-up with the instructor. The goal is to assist grantees with enhancing their skills and ability to develop competitive proposals that will ultimately lead to additional funding for their organizations.
Program Evaluation This year, the Bethany Fund will offer grantees greater support around program evaluation. Grantees will be selected to participate in an intensive program evaluation workshop, followed by individual consultation and support over a several month period. The goal is to assist grantees in need with developing and fine-tuning their evaluations in efforts to better measure and evaluate impact, improve staff efficiency, and improve overall programming.
Marketing
Website/Brochure Design Select grantees work with a Bethany Fund service provider to receive basic website development and design services, and brochure design and printing services. These services assist grantees in furthering their marketing strategies with consumers, funders and other stakeholders.
