Resident Selection and Eligibility

PURPOSE:

 

To establish guidelines in selecting applicants to the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center residency programs.

POLICY:

 

Applicants will be selected that fulfill the institutional criteria, the accrediting agencies guidelines and fulfill the State of Illinois Requirements for Licensing.

Procedure

  1. Resident Eligibility
    1. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the medical programs:
      1. Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
      2. Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
      3. Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
        1. Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, or
        2. Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction.
      4. Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
    2. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the General Practice Dental Program:
      1. Graduates from institutions in the U.S. accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, American Dental Association.
      2. Graduates from institutions in Canada accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the Canadian Dental Association.
      3. Graduates of foreign dental schools, who possess equivalent educational background and standings.
    3. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the Podiatric Medicine & Surgery-36 Residency Program:
      1. Graduates from a podiatric medical college in the U. S. accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPMA)
  2. Resident Selection
    1. Programs shall select residents from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. Programs will not discriminate with regard to race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability or veteran status.
    2. The medical programs will participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), or the AOA Matching Program, National Matching Services (NMS) or the Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies National Matching Program (CASPR).
    3. Outstanding candidates for first year positions, who under the rules of the appropriate matching program may receive offers and sign contracts prior to the match, may be offered such a position.
    4. The process of screening and interviewing applicants may be delegated to members of the faculty but the final responsibility for offering a position, either within or outside the Match, rests with the Program Director.
    5. Applicants for the General Practice Dental Residency Program may be selected either within or outside the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program.
