Consultation Request by Residents
PURPOSE:
To ensure timely communication among the different physicians providing care for a patient.
POLICY:
Resident physicians requesting a consult should, whenever possible, contact the consulted service personally to discuss the case.
Procedure
- A Resident Physician can request a consultation, for an inpatient, by writing an order in the chart or by calling a verbal order to a nurse in the unit where the patient is admitted.
- A resident requesting a consult should, whenever possible, personally contact the consulted service. The notification can be made to the attending or the resident on the consulted service. The resident should note in the orders that the notification of the consult has already taken place.
- It is the policy of the hospital that if no indication is noted in the orders, that the notification of the consult has taken place, then the person "taking the order off" (e.g. nurse) will be responsible for notifying the consultant.
