Evaluation of Residents
PURPOSE:
To assure that the performance and progress of residents is monitored and appropriate feedback is given to them.
POLICY:
Residents should be evaluated and the results of those evaluations should be discussed with them by the Program Director or designee a minimum of twice a year.
Procedure
- The performance of residents should be evaluated in writing in each and every rotation by the responsible faculty. Areas to be evaluated include, but are not limited to, patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and system-based practice.
- Additional evaluations of a resident's performance may be obtained from the senior resident, the junior resident, the medical student, and/or allied health personnel, and patients.
- Written summaries of the resident's performance shall be compiled at least twice a year. The results of these summaries will be communicated to the residents in a timely manner by the Program Director or designee.
- The Program Director must provide a final written evaluation for each resident/fellow who completes the program. This summative evaluation must include a review of the resident/fellow performance during the final period of education, and should verify that the resident has demonstrated sufficient professional ability to practice competently and independently. The final evaluation must be part of the resident/fellows permanent record maintained by the institution.
- All evaluations and semi-annual summaries, as well as the results of any examinations or other written performance assessment, must be maintained by the Program in the resident's permanent file.
