In recognition of Women's Heart Disease Awareness Month, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, in partnership with the Conference of Women Legislators (COWL) and Senator Pam Althoff (R-32nd) will offer free cardiac screenings for women at two separate locations during Valentine's Day week.
"When Senator Althoff approached us with the idea for the screenings, we didn't hesitate. We then asked some of our sister hospitals in other regions of the Chicagoland area to join us with COWL in order to extend the effort's reach," said Julie Mayer, director of community and government relations for Good Shepherd.
COWL is again working with the American Heart Association and the Illinois Department of Public Health to observe Go Red for Women Day in Illinois, and Advocate's clinical role supports the group's broader efforts.
If you have two of the following risk factors, you're a prime candidate to participate in the cardiac risk assessment screenings:
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Limited/infrequent physical activity
- Family history of heart disease
- Over 45 years of age
Please note: these are non-fasting screenings; fasting is not necessary.
