Resident Benefits

Vacation: All residents are given four weeks of paid vacation per year. Interns have an extra week off between PGY-1 and PGY-2.

Sick Leave: All residents are given 24 calendar days of paid sick leave per year. Sick leave can be used as educational leave for professional society conferences.

Health and Disability Insurance: This is available to residents and their dependents for a nominal fee. Dependent coverage is reimbursed up to the amount set by the GME operating committee.

Life Insurance: All residents are given a benefit of one year's stipend provided at no charge. Additional life insurance can be purchased in multiples of this stipend for a nominal fee.

Malpractice Insurance: All full-time residents are covered at 100% for any and all malpractice claims.

Education funds can be used at the UIC Medical Bookstore for the purchase of textbooks or other study material purchases such as UpToDate, MKSAP, MedStudy or USMLE World. In addition, yearly dues for professional medical societies (ACP, AMA, etc.) can be reimbursed through this fund.

Medical Information Resources: All residents are given free at-home access to all on-line library services including UpToDate, MD Consult, Harrison's On-Line, Medline, PubMed and Ovid Full-Text Journals.

Paid Moonlighting: All permanently licensed PGY-3 residents (requires completion and passage of Step 3 and an active, permanent IL state medical license) on a non-admitting rotation are eligible for moonlighting. Available shifts include overnight general medicine ward admitting and specialty services admitting from 5PM to 7AM. A total of 16 shifts are available per academic block. Work is reimbursed at $65 per hour.
