Biking for Hope - Tarek S. Husanyi, MD

Last year for my 60th birthday I hiked the 220-mile John Muir Trail in California. Amongst other reasons, I did it to raise funds to help children with congenital heart disease (CHD). With the generosity of friends, family and colleagues, we raised more than $15,000 for CHD research. I am continuing the tradition this year. Fellow physician David Roberson, MD, and I are participating in The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI)-along with 10,000 other riders. This 454-mile, week-long bike ride beginning July 24 will test our strength, endurance and commitment, but it will also allow us the opportunity to support research and education at The Heart Institute for Children at Advocate Children's Hospital - Oak Lawn - a program near and dear to our hearts.

This is where we need your help. We have set a goal of raising at least $20,000 to help children with congenital heart disease (CHD). We would be extremely grateful if you make a gift today.

Heart defects are the most frequent defects that afflict newborn babies and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Tremendous advances in pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery have resulted in a dramatic increase in the survival rates. Yet there are many diagnostic, therapeutic and quality-of-life-issues to improve.Funds raised for pediatric cardiology research will directly support the work that our fellow physicians are doing to improve patient care at The Heart Institute for Children at Advocate Children's Hospital.

Meet Logan: One of the many patients saved by advances in pediatric cardiology
Logan Michael Vallee was born on July 9, 2000. The day after he was born, Logan turned blue. Testing results showed that Logan had hypoplastic left heart syndrome—a rare and often fatal defect than leaves the left side of the heart severely underdeveloped. With recent advances in care, the outlook for babies born with this syndrome is better than ever. Now 10 years old, Logan has had seven surgeries at Advocate Children's Hospital and continues to defy the odds. Learn more about Logan...
