We welcome your interest in Advocate Lutheran General Hospital’s Psychiatry Residency Program. Since the start of our program in the early 1980’s we have been devoted to the training of superior clinical psychiatrists in a nationally recognized, state-of-the-art community hospital setting.

We are a 638-bed teaching hospital with physicians on staff representing 71 specialties and subspecialties. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital has been nationally ranked a “Top 100 Hospital” 14 times and one of the top 15 major teaching hospitals in the country by Thompson Reuters. With this backdrop as our setting, we provide a close-knit and personal psychiatry training experience of just three residents per PGY year. Our teaching faculty has been selected not only for their knowledge, but also for their enthusiasm for training residents. We take great pride in the supportive and collegial culture that only a program of our size is able to create.

Approximately 25% of our graduates go on to pursue fellowships, primarily in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or Addictions Psychiatry. Many of our alumni practice clinical psychiatry, either locally in the Chicago area or nationally throughout the United States. Several graduates have pursued academic careers by becoming faculty themselves.

So please take a look to see if you might be a good fit for us. Read about our separate inpatient units for Child and Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric Psychiatry; our Partial Hospital Program and Outpatient Clinic located right on the hospital campus; and our Addictions Day Program located less than 10 minutes away. Read about our residents’ opportunities to teach medical students, including the creation of a weekly class of their choosing. Take a look at our didactics and elective opportunities. We hope that as you learn more about us, you become as excited as we are about the psychiatry training experience.

Warmly,

Marla Hartzen, MD
Residency Program Director
Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry
