Exceptions from the 80-Hours Per Week Duty Hours Limit

PURPOSE:
|
|
To describe a procedure to request an exception to the 80-hours per week duty hours limit.
|
|
Policy:
|
|
Request for exceptions to the 80-hours per week duty hours limit must be approved by the Education and Research Committee/GMEC prior to submission to the Residency Review Committee.
|
Procedure
- A program may request an exception from the 80-hour limit from the RRC. Such requests must first be approved by the Education and Research Committee/GMEC and must comply with the following items:
- The request must be made in writing by the program director.
- The exception request must not exceed 10% of the 80-hour limit but it may be lower.
- The sole intent of the request must be to improve the residents' educational experience and all hours in the requested extended work week must contribute to the residents' education.
- The extension may be for only specific portions of the program such as a specific post graduate year or a specific rotation.
- The request for exception must not extend the 24-hour limit on continuous duty or the limit on the up to 6 additional hours for the transfer of care and didactive activities.
- The Director of Medical Education (DME) and/or the DIO will obtain feedback from the residents affected by the request. The DME and/or DIO will provide the feedback received to the Education and Research Committee to be taken into consideration in the discussion of the request.
- If approved by the Education and Research Committee/GMEC, the Program Director will forward the request to the RRC. The communication with the RRC must be co-signed by the Designated Institutional Officer.
