I did the majority of my medical student rotations here and knew that almost every attending and consultant was willing to take the time to teach. Second, I had gotten to know some of the Family Medicine residents from my rotations and thought they would be a fun group to work with. Finally, I was born at ALGH, my family has been coming here for years, in fact, they just call ALGH "The Hospital." Overall, it just felt like home to me.

  • Reason I chose Lutheran General Family Medicine: The working world is all about who you know, but the working happily in that world requires an answer to who knows you. Lutheran is a place where they really want to know who you are. It’s the type of place where people actually care what your answer is to the colloquial “Hi, how are you?” question. It’s the kind of place where didactics are more than just being a generic face that blends into an audience. It’s the personal connections fostered by Lutheran’s atmosphere that made it the community where I wanted to work, learn, and grow.

Undergraduate: Loyola University Chicago (BS Biology, BA Philosophy, BA International Studies, MA Bioethics and Health Policy)
Medical School: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine

  • Reason I chose Lutheran General Family Medicine: I chose ALGHFM for residency because 1) the quality of the training 2) focus on patient care and 3) the many new, exciting things happening here. Consistently ranked as one of the best hospitals and top teaching hospitals in the country, I knew ALGH would provide the best of both an academic/community program. As a nationally recognized top performer for several key quality measures, I knew that the well-being of my patients would always come first. Similarly, as a recognized NCQA Tier 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home and the new initiatives to increase quality patient care, I knew that this program would allow me to stay at the forefront of health care reforms occurring nationally.

I work hard, I dedicate myself to the game and sacrifice a lot of things at a young age, and I know, if I continue to do good what I can get out of it. If that’s me going out and doing whatever, I’m willing to do it…” – Derrick Rose
Ward McCracken, DO

Undergraduate: Penn State, University Park
Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, PA

  • Reason I chose Lutheran General Family Medicine: Of all the programs I interviewed at, Lutheran General was, unquestionably, the best combination of academic excellence combined with community hospital feel. The academics were comparable to some of the big university programs I interviewed with and yet the sense I got on interview day was that everyone was family. The residents (some whose history with the hospital quite literally goes back to birth!) were all fun and very intelligent and it was also telling when every person in the greater community I talked to, without exception, had nothing but wonderful things to say about the hospital and its doctors. Interview day itself really just confirmed for me that I wanted to be like the physicians I saw here. The location is great (best of the burbs and the city), the quality of training is excellent, and from first interaction to the present the program has gone out of its way to make me feel at home - Lutheran was my first choice and I’m definitely excited to continue my training here!
