Advocate Government Relations Update

WHAT: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is soliciting input from Advocate Health Care executive leaders, physicians, patient advocacy groups, and other key health care stakeholders from across the country, as it prepares to draft regulation to implement concepts included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010. Medicare providers, including physician groups and hospitals, will soon have the opportunity to form an accountable care organization (ACO), a model which focuses on delivering more coordinated and efficient health care by creating collaboration among hospitals, physicians and other care givers-- a design seen by many lawmakers as an important step in addressing the increasing cost of health care.

As part of the CMS demonstration project, ACO participants may share financial gains generated from improved clinical and economic performance, provided that quality goals and patient safeguards are met. CMS plans to implement an ACO option no later than January 1, 2012.

Over the past seven years Advocate Health Care through Advocate Physician Partners (APP) has established itself as a leader in clinical integration. Advocate Physician Partners is a collaboration of 3,600 employed and independent physicians and the Advocate Health Care hospitals, which includes ten hospitals and two integrated children's hospitals.

APP physician members currently serve nearly one million people in the Chicagoland area and its demonstrated value to the community is showcased through improved health outcomes and significant cost savings for payers, employers and patients. (APP Value Report)

Advocate's clinical integration success in the private market has sparked wide-spread adoption of its evidence-based practices by physician members. Now administration officials are looking to Advocate executive leaders to share its clinical integration model as it could serve as the foundation for a successful ACO and benefit millions of Medicare recipients nationwide.
