The care provided to cardiac and stroke patients at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center was recently honored with Silver performance achievement awards from the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
BroMenn's cardiac department received a 2010 ACTION Registry - Get With The Guidelines® (GWTW) Silver Performance Achievement Award for improvement in the treatment of heart attack patients. The hospital is one of only 26 hospitals nationwide to receive the recognition.
The award recognizes BroMenn's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients, and signifies that it has reached an aggressive goal of treating coronary artery disease patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.
To receive the ACTION Registry-GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, BroMenn consistently followed the treatment guidelines in ACTION Registry-GWTG for 12 consecutive months. These include aggressive use of medications like cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, and anticoagulants in the hospital.
BroMenn was also honored with an American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke 2010 Silver Performance Achievement Award for ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
Like the cardiac award, the stroke recognition signifies that over 12 months, BroMenn maintained 85 percent or higher compliance to the stroke patient care standards recommended by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation education.
Because they had only formally participated in the GWTG program for 12 months, BroMenn was only eligible for Silver status for both awards. "Gold" honors are reserved for participating hospitals that have reached the 85 percent compliance for 24 consecutive months or more.
