wound healing and hyperbaric medicine

If you've been missing out on the good things in life because of a wound that will not heal, consider a visit or a call to the Advocate BroMenn Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine.

At the Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine, an expert team of specially trained physicians and support staff is available to address your problem wounds. They understand that there are many factors that may be delaying or preventing the healing of your wounds.

With this in mind, the wound care team performs a complete history and physical exam which allows them to develop an individualized treatment plan unique to each patient's needs.  The Center's medical director is Marcia Hauter, MD.  Marlito Favila, MD, and Caroline Halperin, DO, also care for patients.

Your treatment plan may include some or a combination of the following:

  • Laboratory studies
  • X-rays
  • Vascular studies
  • Surgical debridement to remove infected tissue & bone
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Application of specialty dressings or ointments
  • Use of crutches, wheelchairs or other off-loading techniques
  • Nutritional supplements or counseling
  • Physical therapy
  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Sometimes your wounds will not respond to general wound care treatments alone. For some patients, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) is an effective technology that supplements the other treatment methods used by physicians. BroMenn has the area's only Hyperbaric Oxygen chambers.

HBO therapy involves daily visits to the wound center for a period of 3-4 weeks, then follow-up wound care to monitor healing progress. During HBO therapy, you are placed in a pressurized chamber where you breathe 100% oxygen. This increases the presence of oxygen within the wound and thus aids in healing and growth of new tissue. The HBO chambers are comfortable and see-through; a patient can watch television or listen to music during their treatments.

You will be thoroughly educated about HBO therapy prior to beginning treatment. Your family can also be involved in the entire process. Your primary care physician will be kept informed of your progress with regular reports and photos of your wounds. Once your therapy is complete, your care will be returned to your physician for long-term follow-up and monitoring.
