How prevalent is kidney cancer?

The American Cancer Society estimates that a person's lifetime risk of getting kidney cancer is 1 in 75, with more men getting it than women. Kidney cancer is uncommon in people younger than 45.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of kidney cancer include: blood in the urine or urine that looks brownish-red, persistent pain in the side of the abdomen, weight loss, a lump or mass on the side of the abdomen, fever, fatigue.  These symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer, such as infection.

Can kidney cancer be detected early?

While kidney cancer is typically found early as a result of symptoms or as a result of tests for other conditions, there are no screening tests to detect kidney cancer.

What are the risk factors?

  • Gender (men have a greater risk than women)
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Prolonged dialysis

If any medical treatments are ordered by my doctor, will my insurance cover them?

Depending on the type of coverage, most commercial insurance carriers will pay the major share of the cost. You should always consult your insurance company to determine proper coverage.
