How prevalent is liver cancer?

Liver cancer is considered a rare cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that 1 in 114 men will get liver cancer in his lifetime, while 1 in 250 women will get liver cancer in her lifetime.

What are the symptoms?

People with early-stage liver cancer typically do not experience symptoms. As the cancer progresses, patients may experience any or all of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the abdomen or back
  • Jaundice
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Bloating or swelling of the abdomen
  • Easy bruising
  • Bleeding gums
  • Nosebleeds
  • Mental confusion

Can liver cancer be detected early?

There are no screening tests for liver cancer, and early stages of liver cancer tend to be symptom-free.

What are the risk factors?

  • Having Hepatitis B or C cirrhosis
  • Gender (men are twice as likely as women)
  • Family history
  • Age over 60
  • Cancer of the lungs, colon or breast

If any medical treatments are ordered by my doctor, will my insurance cover them?

Depending on the type of coverage, most commercial insurance carriers will pay the major share of the cost. You should always consult your insurance company to determine proper coverage.
