Lymphedema Program
Available at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Lockport and Palos
At Advocate Christ Medical Center, patients who have undergone chemotherapy, radiation, joint replacement and treatment for fractures benefit from our lymphedema program.
The two-stage treatment process is designed to:
- Reduce swelling in the limbs to normal or near-normal levels
- Restore mobility of the limbs
- Prevent infection
- Sustain long-term health
Stage One: Reduce Swelling Patients undergo intensive daily treatments to reduce swelling of the limb, including:
- Manual lymph drainage
- Compression therapy
- Decongestive exercises
- Skin and nail care
Phase Two: Stabilize and Maintain Limb Size Once the swelling is reduced, therapists fit patients with compression garments to keep swelling down. Weekly treatments continue until the limb size is stabilized, and patients return for bi-annual check-ups to promote long term health.
