How prevalent is ovarian cancer?

The eighth most common cancer in women and the fifth deadliest cancers for women, ovarian cancer is estimated by the American Cancer Society to strike 1 in 71 women.

What are the symptoms?

  • Pain or pressure in the abdomen, pelvic area or back
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Nausea or indigestion
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fatigue

Other symptoms include unusual vaginal bleeding such as bleeding after menopause, shortness of breath, or feeling the urge to urinate frequently because of pressure on the bladder.

Can ovarian cancer be detected early?

There is not a routine screening test for ovarian cancer.  If ovarian cancer is suspected because of other symptoms, your doctor may order a CA-125 blood test to measure the level of the CA-125 protein antigen in the blood.

What are the risk factors?

  • Age over 55
  • Starting periods before age 12
  • Never being pregnant
  • Infertility
  • Use of certain fertility drugs
  • Use of estrogen replacement therapy after menopause
  • Family or personal history of breast, uterine or colorectal cancer

If any medical treatments are ordered by my doctor, will my insurance cover them?

Depending on the type of coverage, most commercial insurance carriers will pay the major share of the cost. You should always consult your insurance company to determine proper coverage.

Who is part of the treatment team?

The team at Advocate Christ Medical Center is staffed by a specially trained team of gynecologists, gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, reconstructive urologists, pathologists, genetics counselors and nurses, who are dedicated to caring for patients with endometrial cancer. You will remain under the care of your primary care physician while you are treated by the specialists at Christ Medical Center. To ensure that your physician is kept up-to-date, our team will provide ongoing reports on the progress you have made.
