Lymphedema Prevention and Treatment Program

Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid that causes swelling in the arms, legs or less commonly in other areas of the body. Lymphedema can develop when the lymphatic systems is impaired due to disease, infection or trauma. It can also occur as a result of cancer treatments that involve radiation or removal of lymph nodes. Individuals at risk for developing this painful condition include those who have been treated for the following cancers:

  • breast
  • prostate
  • colon
  • testicular
  • bladder
  • gynecological
  • head and neck

Prevention and Treatment Program
Advocate Christ Medical Center's Lymphedema Prevention and Treatment Program offers guidance in preventing lymphedema for patients at risk of developing the condition, and specialized therapy to help reduce swelling and prevent further lymphatic fluid build-up in individuals with lymphedema.

Prevention
Our lymphedema prevention program is an educational program that emphasizes patient awareness and management. The program covers:

  • causes of lymphedema
  • signs and symptoms
  • risk factors
  • guidelines for activities
  • exercises
  • skin care

Treatment
Christ Medical Center's lymphedema treatment program can provide substantial relief for individuals experiencing discomfort from lymphedema. The intensive two-phase program, led by highly trained physical therapists certified by the Lymphedema Association of North America, is designed to return limb size to normal or near normal levels and provide patients with the skills needed to improve and manage their health.

Phase One: Phase one focuses on reducing swelling. Daily one- to two-hour sessions include:

  • manual lymph drainage
  • compression therapy
  • decongestive exercises
  • skin and nail care

Phase Two: The goal of phase two is to stabilize and maintain the reduction of swelling. During this phase of treatment, patients are fitted for compression garments and continue therapy once or twice a week. Once stabilized, patients receive bi-annual check-ups to ensure ongoing success and optimal results.

The length of the program varies. An individual's success in the program depends upon their participation and compliance with treatment between appointments

Enrollment
A physician referral is required to participate in the program. Patients remain under the care of their primary care physician during the program. The patient's primary care physician receives periodic progress reports and is consulted on matters regarding treatment and healing throughout the program.

Lymphedema treatment is covered by most insurance companies. For more information or to enroll in the program, call 708-346-5425.
