1. Why did my doctor order a basic cardiovascular stress test?
Your doctor asked you to have a stress test at Advocate Christ Medical Center to determine whether your heart gets adequate blood flow during stress or exercise.

2. What preparations will I need to make?
Prior to the procedure, you should avoid caffeinated beverages. Drinking decaffeinated coffee, tea or cola is allowed. You may eat a light meal up to three hours before exercise. If you are a diabetic, eat a light breakfast and take your insulin and other diabetic medications. No smoking the day of the test if possible. It is wise to bring comfortable tennis shoes and loose-fitting pants.

3. How is the test administered?
When you arrive at the medical center for the test, you will be asked to undress to the waist. The skin on your chest will be cleansed and electrocardiogram (EKG) wires applied. You will then be asked to walk on a treadmill until you get too tired to continue or experience symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath. A cardiologist and a technician will be present to monitor your blood pressure and EKG continuously.
