How prevalent is stomach cancer?

About 1 in 100 people in the U.S. will get stomach cancer in their lifetime, with men having greater risk than women.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include:

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Feeling full or bloated after a small meal
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Can stomach cancer be detected early?

Because stomach cancer is not prevalent in the United States, regular screenings have not been found to be effective. However, people with a greater risk of getting stomach cancer may choose to undergo screening tests to detect stomach cancer in its earliest stages.

What are the risk factors?

  • Chronic gastritis
  • Chronic h.pylori infection
  • Pernicious anemia
  • Family history of GI cancers
  • Over age 72
  • Gender (men have greater risk than women)
  • Ethnicity (Asian, Hispanic, African-American and Pacific Islander individuals are at greater risk)
  • Diet high in salted, smoked or pickled foods

If any medical treatments are ordered by my doctor, will my insurance cover them?

Depending on the type of coverage, most commercial insurance carriers will pay the major share of the cost. You should always consult your insurance company to determine proper coverage.
