Having been the first medical center in the United States to implant a HeartMate II® ventricular assist device (VAD) to save a patient's life, Advocate Christ Medical Center continues to be at the forefront of VAD therapy. Since 2000, Christ Medical Center has implanted more than 200 VADs, making us the busiest center in Illinois and one of the busiest centers nationally for VAD therapy.
A ventricular assist device or VAD is a mechanical pump that assists the heart to pump blood. It can be used to treat patients in three ways:
- As a bridge to recovery, assisting patients in their recovery from heart surgery.
- As a bridge to transplant, proving short-term therapy for heart transplant candidates.
- As destination therapy, offering long-term therapy to patients who do not respond to medications and are not candidates for transplant.
Christ Medical Center features the second busiest destination therapy program in the United States. Our highly experienced physicians work closely with patients and their referring providers to ensure the best treatment and quality of life.
