The da Vinci® Surgical System
The da Vinci® Surgical System allows surgeons to offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures. It's a robot, controlled by a highly skilled surgeon. Robot technology provides magnified, three-dimensional views of the surgical site and gives surgeons greater precision, flexibility and control than is possible with standard instruments and techniques. Important benefits for patients include less blood loss, a considerably faster, less painful recovery and reduced scarring. What once required large incisions is now performed through the smallest of incisions with precise control.
How robotic-assisted surgery works
Robotic technology combines 3-D imaging and special instruments with wrist-like joints able to move in any direction. The robotic instruments are an extension of the surgeon's own hands, making possible the most delicate procedures through tiny incisions. This provides the ultimate in flexibility and accuracy of movement for exceptional surgical technique. Because robotic-assisted surgery can help spare nerves, patients will often have better function post-surgery. This is especially important in a sensitive procedure such as prostate surgery.
