Juan Alzate, MD
Dr. Alzate utilizes traditional and minimally invasive approach for spinal surgery and is internationally recognized in performing complex and minimally invasive endoscopic cranial-base surgery. “Using minimally invasive surgical technologies, we are able to reduce surgical complications and speed recovery with minimal scaring, where possible,” Dr. Alzate notes.

Dr. Alzate believes in fully educating all patients on the surgical process and empowers them patients to make informed decisions regarding their treatment plan. Dr. Alzate earned a medical degree from the Universidad del Valle Medical School in Cali, Colombia, where he graduated with honors. He received training in neurosurgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.
Previously, Dr. Alzate served as a research scholar at the Freie Universidad Berlin in Germany and at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The focus of his research was on endoscopic surgery for the brain and spine. Dr. Alzate is fluent in Spanish.
Philosophy of Care: It is most important that patients are informed and comfortable with their surgical decision and treatment plan. Patients who are more informed regarding their treatment plan and associated risks have the right expectations, and are better poised for a speedy recovery.
Thomas Baier, MD
Dr. Baier serves as the team physician for the Libertyville High School football team, as well as other local football and soccer teams. Dr. Baier has been practicing Orthopedic Surgery in Lake County since 1985, with a special focus on sports medicine and total joint reconstruction. He utilizes the “cementless total knee and total hips” and is certified in mini-incision hip replacement (MIS), and anterior hip replacement.

Dr. Baier is an expert in joint replacements, having performed hundreds of total and partial joint replacements. In 2012, Dr. Baier performed a double knee replacement on a 6’10” former college basketball player. Due to the new process at Condell, the patient started his rehabilitation the night of surgery and continued his rehabilitation at both a skilled nursing facility and then in outpatients. In 2013, the patient cycled 2,121 miles. His outcome was so successful because of the physician patient partnership.
Dr. Baier is a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. In 2008, Dr. Baier completed a tour to Mosul, Iraq, during Operation Iraq Freedom (OIF). Then 2010, deployed to Afghanistan, FOB shank, during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and again in 2012.

Gregory Caronis, MD
Dr. Gregory Caronis is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle specialist who utilizes the most current methods to achieve the most successful outcomes. Dr. Caronis has a great interest in total ankle replacement, and has completed training in using the STAR and InBone total ankle replacements. Dr. Caronis is an expert in managing both adult and pediatric conditions of the foot and ankle, including: arthritis, deformities, chronic pain, diabetic foot deformities, flat feet, bunions, and neuromas.

Another great interest of Dr. Caronis' is the treatment of fractures. He is often able to treat many of these without surgery, when he uses various casts or braces. When necessary, he is able to repair fractures using the most current surgical techniques and methods, using plates, rods, screws, external fixators, and bone stimulators. He performs minimally invasive fracture repair surgery.
Dr. Caronis is fluent in Greek.

Jonathan Citow, MD
Dr. Jonathan Citow is internationally recognized for his innovation—the Citow Cervical Visualizer, which is a spinal device utilized worldwide. Currently, Dr. Citow is the chief of Neurosurgery at Advocate Condell Medical Center.

Dr. Citow achieved outstanding results in the most advanced treatment of many complex spinal disorders, and minimally invasive spinal surgery. He is also recognized for his treatment of many disorders of the brain and spine.
Dr. Citow has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals. He sits on the submission review board of the international journal Spinal Cord. Dr. Citow is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, as well as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He cares for both adult and pediatric neurosurgical patients.

Roger Collins, MD
Dr. Collins specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and shoulder surgery. His main focus is shoulder surgery, including shoulder reconstruction, shoulder replacement and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. He is an expert in knee reconstruction, including arthroscopic ACL reconstruction.

Dr. Collins is an avid skier and hockey player. He was a collegiate athlete playing varsity ice hockey for the United States Air Force Academy. From this firsthand experience, Dr. Collins understands the athlete’s commitment to return to play, and works with each patient to achieve their goals.
Dr. Collins has been named one of the named as one of “America's Top Physicians” by the Consumer's Research Council of America and was recently selected as a candidate for the “Honors Edition” of Empire's Who's Who Among Executives and Professionals in Medicine and Healthcare.

Sheri Dewan, MD
Dr. Dewan is a neurosurgeon with advanced training in complex spine disorders. Her special interests include brain tumors, complex spinal disorders including; degenerative disc disease, chiari malformation, and pituitary tumors. Dr. Dewan has received awards for her research on radiosurgery for brain tumors and performs radiosurgical procedures for spinal tumors as well.

Dr. Dewan has lived in five countries, including South Korea and Saudi Arabia, and enjoys traveling, scuba diving and spending time with her husband and three children. Dr. Dewan served as chief resident to a busy clinical service including adults and pediatrics at Brown University. She also covered a Level I spine and neurotrauma center.

Robert Erickson, MD
Dr. Erickson focuses on complex and minimally invasive spinal surgery, cerebral aneurysms, brain and spine tumors, chiari malformations, trigeminal neuralgia and hydrocephalus. He has been recognized for his training of surgical residents and medical students for the past 19 years. Dr. Erickson cares for both adult and pediatric neurosurgical patients, and is a member of both the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Charles Frank, MD
Dr. Frank is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who, over his more than 30 years in practice, has treated a great range of musculoskeletal problems. He treats adults and children for general orthopedic needs. He has additional training and specializes in disorders of the hand and wrist, both operative and non-operative. This includes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, nerve and tendon lacerations, arthritis, trigger fingers, fractures, plastic surgery on hands, and other injuries.

As an active member of the medical community, Dr. Frank teaches medical students and helps train surgical nurses and technicians. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and Lake County Medical Society. He has five children, and holds a commercial pilot’s license. John Mayer, MD
Dr. Mayer is a fellowship-trained specialist in total joint replacement of the hip and knee, including difficult primary and revision cases. Dr. Mayer has been in practice since 1987 and has completed thousands of total joint replacements in his career. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Mayer is a member of Advocate Condell’s Joint Leadership Committee and sits on Advocate’s system- wide Orthopedic Specialty Service Line committee.

Dr. Mayer incorporates the latest in orthopedic research and literature into his practice, while still relying on proven concepts and techniques. Dr. Mayer guides his patients through the decision making process and lends a realistic perspective to the vast amount of information that is often confusing for patients. He has co-authored several articles, and given numerous presentations in the field.
Dr. Mayer was raised in the Chicago area. He played college and professional soccer. He enjoys gardening, landscape design and architecture.

Joseph Meis, MD
Dr. Meis helped to create the total joint replacement program at Advocate Condell Medical Center, and has expertise in both the operative and non-operative treatment of arthritis, including minimal incision hip and knee replacement. Dr. Meis’ practice also involves caring for patients with knee injuries, including the arthroscopic treatment of ligament and cartilage injuries.

Dr. Meis has been a competitive cyclist for over 40 years. He is a former Illinois State Cycling Champion, and finished as high as third place at the Masters' National Track Bike Championships. He has been certified by the United States Cycling Federation as a level one coach. His experiences as an athlete have helped Dr. Meis meet the special needs of endurance athletes of all ages in his orthopedic practice.

Mark Neault, MD
Dr. Neault specializes in state-of-the-art arthroscopic surgical techniques, including shoulder reconstruction, knee reconstruction and hip and ankle arthroscopy. Other specialty operations include reconstruction of massive rotator cuff tears with biologic scaffolds, shoulder arthritis in patients of all ages, as well as minimally invasive techniques to treat tendon disorders.

Dr. Mark Neault serves as a team physician with local high schools and colleges. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery training at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center followed by a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Minneapolis Sports Medical Center. There Dr. Neault served as a team physician for the Minnesota Twins, Timberwolves, Wild, Vikings and Gophers. He continues to serve as a consulting team physician for the Minnesota Twins, and cares for them when they are in town to play the Chicago White Sox.

Marcus Talerico, MD
Dr. Talerico is a hand and upper extremity specialist who has had the privilege to serve as an orthopedic surgeon on active duty in the U.S. Navy. “Through this experience I came to better appreciate the concept of working as a member of a team. I have taken this approach with me to private practice. In both an outpatient and inpatient setting I serve as a leader of a team of people to obtain the best possible outcomes for our orthopedic patients.”
