DOWNERS GROVE - Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove has been nationally recognized for excellence in U.S. News & World Report's 2009-2010 'America's Best Hospitals' ranking.
Good Samaritan Hospital was rated as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for digestive disorders care in the 20th annual report published in the August edition of U.S. News & World Report.
"To be recognized nationally for excellence in clinical outcomes is very gratifying for the team of caregivers at Good Samaritan," said David Fox, president of Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. "This recognition is further evidence of the world class care being provided in our local community by the highly qualified and committed physicians and employees on our staff."
U.S. News & World Report noted that Good Samaritan and the other hospitals singled out as 'America's Best Hospitals' are regional referral centers that diagnose, treat and manage higher volumes of difficult medical conditions. The hospitals also conduct pioneering research, utilize advanced treatment guidelines and are leaders in the use of cutting-edge improvements in imaging, surgical and other technologies.
"At Good Samaritan, we believe that we are first and foremost a clinical enterprise," Fox added. "As a result, we strive continuously to ensure that our patients have access to the latest technology and evidence-based clinical practice while delivering on our promise of compassionate care."
The U.S. News & World Report rankings were based on a hospital's overall score made up of four parts that address quality of care: reputation, mortality index, patient safety and other care-related factors. Out of 4,861 hospitals evaluated, only 174 met the rigorous high-quality standards to be ranked in a specialty this year.
To be a candidate for the 'America's Best Hospitals' recognition, hospitals had to meet one of three criteria: be a teaching hospital, have at least 200 beds or have at least 100 beds along with a minimum of four out of eight important medical technologies. This year, 44 percent of all hospitals in the country met at least one of these requirements.
Also recognized in this year's study was Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, for gynecology care.
The annual 'America's Best Hospitals' list is produced by RTI International, a leading research organization based in North Carolina.
Good Samaritan Hospital is a 340-bed acute care facility and is the only Level I Trauma Center in DuPage County and a Level III Perinatal Center, both of which are the highest designations recognized by the state of Illinois.
Good Samaritan Hospital has also been selected as one of the nation's best hospitals and top 20 community hospitals by the 2008 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks study.
