Some conditions occur more often in families and can be inherited. These are called genetic disorders. Your physician will help you determine whether genetic counseling is right for you. A genetic counselor can help determine your chance of having a child with a birth defect. In some cases parents can be tested before pregnancy to see if a genetic disorder might be passed to their children. In others testing is completed during pregnancy. Cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, Tay-Sachs disease, Fragile X and others disorders can be identified through genetic testing. |
