Cancer Genetics Program
Providing comprehensive information and support
The Cancer Genetics Program at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is dedicated to providing patients with the most current information about hereditary cancer risk and recommendations for cancer screening and follow up.
Is cancer hereditary?
Many people believe cancer strikes randomly, but that's not always the case. Recent advances in research clearly identify a link between genes and some types of cancer. In approximately 5-10 percent of families with a history of cancer, a gene change is inherited, predisposing those who carry it to cancer. Not all individuals who carry the gene change will develop cancer, however, their risk for developing cancer is significantly higher. It is important to identify families with a hereditary susceptibility to cancer, because in many cases, they can take steps to reduce their risk or prevent cancer from occurring.
What are some potential indicators of hereditary cancer?
- Cancer diagnosed at an early age
- Breast cancer in one or more first degree relatives (mother, sister, grandmother)
- Both breast and ovarian cancer in a family or individual
- More than one type of cancer in the same individual
- An identified cancer gene mutation in a family member
- Recognized cancer syndrome in a family member, such as LiFraumeni, von Hippel Lindau, familial polposis
Individuals or families may be referred for genetic counseling if one or more of the above is present.
How can someone learn more about their risk for a hereditary cancer?
The Cancer Genetics Program accepts referrals of individuals who may be at an increased risk of developing cancer due to their family history or personal risk factors. Following a comprehensive cancer risk assessment, if genetic testing is indicated, individuals will be fully educated about the process so that they may make an informed decision.
What does cancer risk counseling involve?
Individuals meet with a cancer geneticist to review their medical and family history and to assess their personal risk for cancer. A cancer genetic counseling session at Good Samaritan Hospital includes the following:
- Overall review of the role of genetics in cancer
- Discussion of the individual's family/medical history
- Personal cancer risk assessment
- Discussion of appropriate screening test and medical evaluations
- Discussion of available genetic testing when appropriate including risks, benefits and limitations.
- Referrals to other specialists (oncologist, psychiatrist, surgeon, etc.)
What is genetic testing for cancer?
Genetic testing involves obtaining a small sample of blood to look for a change in the genetic material. This change may indicate an increased risk for certain cancers. Undergoing genetic testing for cancer is a voluntary and personal decision. Genetic counselors will help individuals to make choices that are right for them. Genetic Counseling will involve more than one visit. The information discussed and results of genetic tests will be kept confidential and will not be released without your written consent.
