What is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial is research done to evaluate new treatments for cancer. The goal is to find safer, more effective ways to treat or prevent cancer. Many types of treatments may be tested, including:

* New drugs
* New ways to utilize existing treatment (such as surgery or radiation therapy)
* New combinations of existing drugs
* New ways of preventing cancer (such as new drugs, diet, and/or exercise)

When clinical trials identify new and more effective treatments, these treatments will eventually become the new standard of care that will be offered to future patients. Today's standard treatments were researched and proven by clinical trials done in the past.

May I decline to participate?
You may decline to participate at any point. Even after you start the study you may change your mind. Likewise, the doctor may advise you to discontinue the study for various reasons, especially if the treatment is not helping you or if you are experiencing severe side effects. You will not be penalized in any way if you decide not to participate. You will still receive the best standard care available.
