Emergency Department and Level 1 Trauma Center

When time is critical, expertise makes a difference. At Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital's Emergency Department the most experienced physicians are in-house 24 hours a day. In addition, all of our emergency medicine physicians are board certified and our surgeons are board certified or board eligible. Our experienced emergency services team is committed to providing around the clock, hands-on care to every patient, from admission through discharge.

The Good Samaritan Emergency Department features:

• Board-certified emergency medicine physicians who have been a part of this community for more than 23 years.
• Highly-trained nurses, most having Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Emergency Pediatric certification as well as trauma certification.
• Approval by the State of Illinois to treat pediatric injuries and illnesses.
• The only Level I Trauma facility in DuPage County.

• Less Waiting
  
  Having more nurses in the Emergency Department allows a patient's condition to be assessed sooner so that treatment can begin in a timelier manner. No matter how serious or minor the injury or illness, our staff understands how important quick, yet accurate diagnosis can help alleviate a stressful circumstance.
• More Communication
  
  Also, a nurse liaison, present in the Emergency Department seven days a week, communicates with family members regarding the patient's status to provide peace-of-mind. Our nurse liaison will help address concerns regarding your loved one to help put you at ease.
• Faster Treatment
  
  Our new automated bedside registration process also saves wait time in the Emergency Department. Once a patient has been assessed and escorted to an examination room, the staff will ask for registration information while other emergency staff is taking vital signs and our Emergency Department physician is performing his/her evaluation.
• Quicker Test Results
  
  Our Emergency Department staff has worked closely with our laboratory and radiology departments to make our emergency patients' test results a priority. Test results are delivered to the emergency room as soon as test results have been processed, allowing our medical team to evaluate the appropriate treatment plan.
• Cardiac Alert
  
  Our Emergency Department Cardiac Alert protocol saves lives. If arriving by emergency medical services, paramedics will report heart attack symptoms directly to our Emergency Department even before arrival. While the ambulance is in transit, we will assemble specially trained emergency staff to diagnosis the patient as well as prepare the appropriate technology for intervention. At Good Samaritan Hospital, we understand time is crucial in saving a life and saving heart muscle.
• Stroke Alert
  
  According to the National Stroke Association, stroke accounts for more than one out of every 15 deaths in the United States. Our Stroke Alert program is designed to provide patients with timely treatment to help prevent brain and/or heart damage. Upon arrival, a patient will quickly be assessed by a physician, have a CT scan performed, receive a diagnosis and begin treatment. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCACHO) recently awarded Good Samaritan Hospital certification for this new life saving protocol.

Level 1 Trauma Center
The Level 1 Trauma Center at Good Samaritan Hospital is the only one in DuPage County, and is recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health and The American College Surgeons. Surgical coverage is provided at the hospital 24 hours a day, and 24 hours a day out-of-house back-up by board certified Trauma Attendings. No resident coverage is provided.

Educational opportunities for trauma nurses and physicians and emergency services personnel, available through our Outreach Program, as well as an extensive Injury Prevention Program for the community.
