minimally invasive surgery

Minimally invasive surgery is unique because unlike traditional large incision surgeries where surgeons make long cuts through skin, muscle and sometimes bone, minimally invasive procedures are performed through one or more small incisions. For most patients, the advantages are:

  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain and scarring
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is proud to bring one of the most advanced minimally invasive surgical technology currently available close to home - the da Vinci® Surgical System.

The da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System

The da Vinci® Surgical System allows surgeons to offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures. It's a robot, controlled by a highly skilled surgeon. Robot technology provides magnified, three-dimensional views of the surgical site and gives surgeons greater precision, flexibility and control than is possible with standard instruments and techniques.

How Robotic-Assisted Surgery Works

da Vinci Surgical SystemRobotic technology combines 3-D imaging and special instruments with wrist-like joints able to move in any direction. The robotic instruments are an extension of the surgeon's own hands, making possible the most delicate procedures through tiny incisions. This provides the ultimate in flexibility and accuracy of movement for exceptional surgical technique.

Because robotic-assisted surgery can help spare nerves, patients will often have better function post-surgery. This is especially important in a sensitive procedure such as prostate surgery. Patients will typically have less pain, less blood loss and a much shorter recovery time.
