Cardiology Services & Treatments
Good Shepherd’s Cardiac Care Center offers a wide range of cardiac services. From the most common to the most complex heart conditions, our physicians are skilled at providing effective, individualized care.
Our Comprehensive Heart Care
Early diagnosis is the key to the best possible outcome in cardiac care. Diagnostic testing includes stress tests, electrocardiograms (EKG), echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, event monitor testing, echo doppler testing, tilt table procedures, vascular studies, Holter monitor testing and pediatric EKGs. Our 3-D high definition trans-esophageal echocardiogram is the only one of its kind in the area, providing clearer images and reducing the number of tests required.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department offers CT Angiography (CTA), a non-invasive test that helps detect blockages in the blood vessels. CTA uses the advanced 64-slice CT scanner to take multiple X-rays of the body from many angels to visualize the vessels. For some, CTA can be an alternative to a diagnostic catheterization.
Our state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab offers the latest and most comprehensive diagnostic and interventional capabilities. The cath lab's intravascular ultrasound provides images of the inside of vessels helping practitioners identify the best treatment methods.
Our multidisciplinary cardiologists perform a range of advanced procedures. Comprehensive techniques and therapies provide lifesaving interventional heart care onsite within minutes of diagnosis. These techniques include balloon angioplasty, atherectomy and stenting, drug coated stents that help prevent future blockages, cutting balloons and angiojet.
Carotid artery stenting is the newest intervention for treating carotid artery disease, the leading cause of stroke. Carotid artery disease is the buildup of plaque in one or both carotid arteries, which supply blood to the front of the brain. Of the nearly 500,000 stroke occurrences each year, over 60% are linked to carotid artery disease.
Cardiologists trained in electrophysiology (EP) provides expert therapies for treating heart rhythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation. At Good Shepherd, electrophysiologists have access to the latest in EP technology, including computer-assisted 3-D mapping which allows for pinpoint accuracy in treating heart rhythm disturbances. We also offer the latest in pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, including biventricular pacing devices and new FDA-approved MRI-safe pacemakers.
The Cardiac Care Center’s dedicated operating suites provide the most advanced cardiovascular surgical environment for open heart procedures such as coronary bypass, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery and valve replacements. The cardiovascular surgeons at Good Shepherd Hospital have the expertise needed to provide patients with off-pump open heart procedures and minimally invasive surgical repairs.
Minimally invasive surgery can be used to repair heart valves and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). While not all patients are candidates for minimally invasive surgery, our physicians evaluate each patient’s condition to determine the best alternatives for treatment.
Cardiac Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Aftercare
Our cardiac rehabilitation program gives patients an invaluable physical and emotional resource. The program consists of monitored exercise and education for patients who have had a recent heart event or have been diagnosed with lung disease. The benefits of this program can include increased activity tolerance and knowledge of how to improve overall health as well as regular monitoring and reporting of results to physicians. We provide comprehensive, individualized services that help patients regain their strength, reduce risk factors and help prevent future illness. Over 1,000 patients have successfully experienced the encouraging, healing environment of Good Shepherd Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation program.
