What to expect from an inpatient stay

During the course of their treatment, cancer patients sometimes must be admitted to the hospital for symptom management, chemotherapy or end-of-life care. Good Shepherd Hospital is a compassionate, caring hospital that provides the same highly skilled care as larger facilities in the city. We just do it closer to home.

Your Care
Throughout your stay, your care will follow a plan developed by a
multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing you the best possible care for your physical, emotional and spiritual health. Cancer patients stay on our fourth-floor medical/surgical/oncology unit. The unit manager will stop in daily to discuss any concerns or problems. When you’re ready to go home, the same team will make sure you have access to any equipment or community services you need, such as home health or a nursing aide.

Nurses and Staff
During your stay, your nurses and technicians will write their names and mobile phone numbers on a chart in your room so you can call them directly if you need something. If you’re readmitted, you’ll have the same nurses caring for you as much as possible. As part of our commitment to superior health care, all nurses who provide chemotherapy have completed specialized oncology training through the Oncology Nursing Society.

Visitors
Visiting hours are 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. We also offer flexible visiting hours in order to meet the needs of our oncology patients and their families.

For you and your visitors, our oncology patient and family resource room is equipped with television and video players, an Internet-accessible computer that includes a list of reputable sites of interest to cancer patients, and puzzle and games for children.
