Lymphedema Prevention and Treatment Program When cancer treatment requires removal of lymph nodes and/or radiation treatments, patients may be at risk for lymphedema – an accumulation of fluid that causes abnormal swelling in one or both arms or legs. Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has been a leader in lymphedema treatment since 1999, and we have obtained the highest possible certifications in lymphedema care. Our lymphedema prevention program emphasizes education and awareness. We encourage post-mastectomy patients and others at risk to learn the causes, symptoms and risk factors for lymphedema, as well as activities, exercises and skin care to prevent it. We also provide continuous care throughout all stages of the disease. Registered physical therapists who have specialized training in lymphedema care work closely with patients’ physicians in developing treatments. Patients from any hospital may enroll, but a physician’s referral is required. For more information on lymphedema, visit the National Lymphedema Network Web site at www.lymphnet.org Contact |
