Stereotatic Breast Biopsy

When a mammogram reveals a breast mass that cannot be felt upon examination, your doctor may order a biopsy to determine whether the mass is cancerous or benign. At Good Shepherd Hospital, specially trained technologists may use x-ray guided, or stereotactic, breast biopsy to avoid more invasive surgical approaches.

Stereotactic biopsy involves computerized or digital images that pinpoint the precise location of the mass, allowing physicians to remove a small piece of it with a needle. Stereotactic biopsies typically take from 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Most women have little or no pain, and there is no visible scar. Pathologists must examine the tissue specimen, and results are usually available within a few days.

Good Shepherd Hospital partners with breastbiopsy.com to bring those who may be facing a breast biopsy procedure in depth information and options to help them evaluate their choices and speak with their doctors about which would be best for them. Not only does it offers in-dept information about the procedures, but patients can read and share stories with one another. Visit breastbiopsy.com for more information.
