Lung Scans at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital

Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States—more so than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. However, it is estimated that 80% of the lung cancers can be cured if detected at an early stage.

The lung scans at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital are performed by the 64-slice CT—a revolutionary technology with the ability to capture images of the lungs in amazing detail and clarity. Doctors can now accurately detect the presence of disease at much earlier stages making treatment more effective and possibly less invasive. The 64-slice CT is much faster than a conventional CT—whole body scans can be done in just 10 seconds!

If there is a history of lung cancer in your family, are a smoker or former smoker, and/or have had long-term exposure to second-hand smoke or other potentially cancer-causing agents such as asbestos or randon, you may benefit from a lung scan to detect potential disease. Patients who have had previous cardiac or lung surgery would not be candidates for the scan.

How the test is performed
The lung scan tests for nodules or defects in the lungs. It’s a painless and quick procedure lasting approximately 30 minutes. During the CT scan, you will simply lay comfortably and non-confined on the exam table while the test is performed. The actual imaging only takes a few seconds. Once your test is completed, the results are reviewed by a board certified radiologist and mailed to your physician. You will receive a CD-ROM of your lung scan plus information about smoking cessation and lung disease. You do not need to prepare in any way for the procedure. Scheduling and Cost
Call HealthAdvisor at 1-800-3-ADVOCATE (1-800-323-8622) to schedule your lung scan. Lung CT scans are performed during convenient day and evening hours, Monday through Thursday.

The cost for a lung scan is $375. You may pay by cash or check at the time of your appointment.

Please note that insurance does not pay for the lung CT scan.
