Naprapathy

Integrative Medicine utilizes an alternative approach to establish wellness in the body. We strive to provide the very best in health programming and physical balance. Of the patients who visit our office, 85% are looking for an alternative to "living with the pain" and drugless therapies.

Naprapathy is a natural, wholistic treatment that utilizes gentle manipulation of the spine and other articulations of the body. Based on the concept that constricted connective tissue (ligaments, muscles and tendons) interfere with nerve, blood and lymph flow, naprapathy uses manipulation of connective tissue to open these channels of body function.

Naprapaths believe the body has inherent recuperative capabilities. Given the optimal environment, manipulation assists the body in its recuperative ability. Once a patient experiences the benefits of naprapathic treatments, regular visits becomes an important part of their health care program.

Why manipulation?
The common denominator in any disease is stress. Under stressful conditions, connective tissues such as muscles, ligaments and tendons contract. As these tissues shrink, normal function within the area decreases. Blood circulation and nerve pathways become constricted or irritated. Clinical studies have suggested that with manipulation and stretching by qualified practitioners, these constricted or irritated pathways will have the opportunity to return to the normal state needed by healthy bodies.

Adjunctive therapies may be used to increase circulation and relax muscles and ligaments. These therapies may include ice packs, hot compresses, ultrasound and electrical muscle stimulation.

Common Conditions
Many medical conditions benefit through treatment by naprapathy. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Joint pain
  • Structural headaches
  • Migraines
  • TMJ
  • Spasms
  • Sprain/strains
  • Tennis elbow
  • Whiplash
  • Shoulder pain

What to expect at your first visit
To obtain a clear and complete picture of your health status, a complete case history will be taken and a thorough physical evaluation will be made with techniques unique to the naprapathic profession. This history may include questions concerning your physical activities, diet and levels of stress. You may also be asked about any previous injuries and other treatment you have undergone. Feel free to ask your naprapath any questions about your condition.

After the comprehensive evaluation of your condition, you will receive a gentle hand manipulation of the spine, ligaments, muscles and surrounding joints. A naprapathic-specific manipulation helps to restore a state of normal function.

Gentle exercises will be discussed to rehabilitate the body. In addition to regular spinal care and proper nourishment to the tissues, exercise therapy will allow for proper healing.

Appointments
Appointments are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Contact the Integrative Medicine office at 847.620.4560 for appointment availability or to answer any questions you may have.

At the present time, many insurance companies recognize payment for naprapathic health care. Individuals should check with their carrier to determine if naprapathy is covered under their health plan.
