Pediatric Capabilities
Whether it’s a few stitches after a fall, a tonsillectomy, or more critical care, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has the expertise to care for your child’s medical needs.
Good Shepherd Hospital has pediatric hospitalists in house 24/7, so there is always a specialist here at the hospital to care for children. Having the pediatric hospitalist team at the hospital means that parents always have access to a doctor – even in the middle of the night – if they have questions or concerns.
The pediatric unit is specially designed to make children feel comfortable. It’s a little bit quieter with kid-friendly decorating. The unit also is locked for added safety, meaning that children wear monitoring bracelets, and visitors have to be buzzed in.
Nurses on the unit all undergo specific pediatric training above and beyond their regular education, including a three-week, full-time training at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital. Nurses also all are PALS certified, with training in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
The focus on children goes beyond the pediatric unit. Since so many children come to Good Shepherd Hospital’s Emergency Department, the ED is specially equipped to handle their care. It has a special treatment area for children and holds an EDAP (Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics) certification from the state of Illinois. In addition, the nurses and staff are specially trained to care for the health needs of children in an emergency setting.
