Neurology and Neurodiagnostics

Members of the division of neurology at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital have dual board certification in pediatrics and neurology. They consult on a large percentage of all patients at Hope Children's Hospital, offering a wide range of neurological services unique to the region and coordinating treatment with both primary and other specialty physicians.

Capabilities include treatment of coma, status epilepticus, Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, meningitis, encephalitis and neurological disorders of the newborn. Services for chronic neurological disorders are also offered for seizure disorders, neuromuscular disorders, attention deficit disorders, headaches (including migraine), developmental problems and cerebral palsy. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), an alternative treatment for seizure, is now available.

The neurology division is also actively involved in electrodiagnostic services, which include electroencephalography (EEG), neonatal EEG with polygraphic recording, and inpatient/outpatient ambulatory EEG with video monitoring. The division coordinates a unique approach to the evaluation of children's hearing problems. The expertise of both neurologists and audiologists are incorprated into the interpretation of brainstem auditory-evoked responses. Visual-evoked responses are also offered for testing of the visual pathways.

The neurology division participates in an active teaching role for residents and medical students from a number of major medical schools in the region. Lectures, conferences and teaching rounds are maintained in order to promote interest, education and state-of-the-art care for children with neurological disorders.
