Pediatric Rehabilitation and Development

Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital’s pediatric rehabilitation and development department includes both comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs. Our program is unique to the Chicagoland area as it is the only pediatric rehabilitation program that is located inside an acute care hospital.

The inpatient rehabilitation program treats children in the hospital with physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities resulting from brain trauma, infection, stroke, orthopedic injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, cancer and neuromuscular problems. The rehabilitation team helps children regain their childhood playfulness, resume their life outside the hospital, and return to school, as appropriate.

The members of the rehabilitation team are specialists in improving the function of children who have impairments in motor and/or cognitive skills. Team members may include a physiatrist, developmental pediatrician, rehabilitation nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, developmental therapist, audiologist, neuropsychologist, educational specialist, therapeutic recreation specialist, social worker, dietician, child life specialist, and chaplain.

The outpatient rehabilitation and development program provides comprehensive assessments and coordinates treatment programs for children to address physical disabilities, orthopedic injuries, developmental delays, communication and speech disorders, feeding/swallowing difficulties, sensory integration, and fine motor coordination. In addition, we also offer several outpatient rehabilitation developmental clinics for evaluation of specific medical diagnoses and recommendations for continuing care. We are an Early Intervention provider for the State of Illinois program.
