Our board-certified emergency physicians serve as faculty for the University of Illinois Emergency Medicine Residency program. Neurosurgeons, neonatologists and pediatric and other specialists are also on-site 24/7 to provide specialized care when needed.
Level I Trauma Center
One of only four Level I Trauma Centers in Chicago, we are recognized as a leader in providing the highest level of care for critically ill and injured patients. Our board-certified surgeons, who have specialty training in critical care medicine, consult with orthopedic, neurosurgical/spinal and perinatal specialists when caring for trauma patients.

Pediatric Emergency Care
The Emergency Department has been recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP). Our Emergency staff is specially trained to care for children using pediatric equipment and guidelines for child-appropriate medications. In addition, our Emergency Department offers:
- Specially-trained pediatric nurses to provide emergency care to children
- Kid-friendly areas designed for pediatric patients
- 24-hour in-house pediatric physicians
- An Inpatient Pediatric Unit for children in need of longer-term care
- Access to a child life therapist, who provides emotional and physical support for infants through teens and their families during hospital stays
Emergency Operations Center
Illinois Masonic Medical Center has been designated by local and national agencies to lead the Chicago area medical response in the event of a city, state or national disaster. We also serve as a resource hospital for Chicago’s Emergency Medical Services, providing medical control for daily ambulance transport and oversight for the quality of care. In addition, we oversee paramedic support for special events, such as marathons and music festivals, throughout Chicago.
Our emergency physicians, nurses and staff have special training and expertise not only to care for individuals in our community but to coordinate complex treatment for the City of Chicago and beyond. We have the technology and equipment required for the most advanced emergency care.
Using our Fast Track process, we can often treat less serious injuries and illnesses, such as sprains and minor cuts, with shorter wait times.
We offer a number of services not typically found in emergency departments, such as:

- Behavioral health specialists and crisis intervention counselors
- Sexual assault nurse examiners
