Neuromodulation Therapy (InterStim)

When the brain and the nerves that control the bladder don't communicate correctly, the bladder doesn’t function properly. Normally, the sacral nerves located near the bladder signal the brain when the bladder is becoming full. The brain then signals the bladder muscles to produce the urge to urinate. If you have urinary incontinence, these signals no longer work correctly. This results in urinary frequency or urgency, or an inability to empty the bladder completely.

Neuromodulation therapy is a proven treatment method that targets the sacral nerves to help restore bladder control when medication and other methods have not been successful.

InterStim® Therapy:  Take Back Control

InterStim® neuromodulation therapy, offered by physicians at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, is an FDA-approved technology that works like a pacemaker. It uses mild electronic pulses to regulate nerve impulses that control the bladder and muscles related to urinary function, helping control symptoms such as leaks, sudden urges to urinate or urinating too often.

Is InterStim Therapy Right for Me?

If you've tried other treatments but are still suffering from bladder control problems, ask your physician if InterStim® therapy is right for you. Your physician may suggest a trial evaluation to test its effectiveness before you make a long-term commitment.
