Osvaldo Lopez, MD, chief of the Section of Ophthalmology at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, is a pioneer in the field of corneal refractive surgery.
Dr. Lopez received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School. Following an internship at Northwestern, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at Michael Reese Hospital, where he served as chief resident. He pursued specialty training and completed a fellowship in the diseases of the cornea with Louis Girard, MD, at the Texas Institute of Ophthalmology in Houston. Dr. Lopez was also trained in refractive surgery by Jose Barraquer, MD, considered the father of modern refractive surgery, at the Instituto Barraquer in Bogota, Colombia.
A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Lopez is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Chicago Ophthalmology Society. He also is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Lopez is widely recognized as one of the nation's leading corneal surgeons. One of the first local ophthalmologists to perform innovative refractive procedures, he has pioneered new surgical techniques and has designed devices used in eye surgery. His commitment to bringing innovation to ophthalmologic patient care has earned him numerous honors, including the State of Illinois Lincoln Medal for Medicine. Dr. Lopez has been featured by Chicago magazine as one of Chicago's Top Doctors, selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. Dr. Lopez has also been named by the Consumers' Research Council of America as one of the country's top ophthalmologists.
