Vice Chair and Program Director's Statement

The Lutheran General Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Vision is to prepare physicians for successful careers in Internal Medicine by providing a solid foundation of formal medical knowledge and helping them develop necessary skills in communication, problem solving, lifelong learning, continuous teaching, and the compassionate care of their patients.

As a graduate of the Lutheran General Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program and faculty member here for 27 years I can attest to the excellent training I received that has prepared me well for my career as General Internist, Hospitalist, and teacher. Hundreds of Lutheran General Internal Medicine Residency graduates have gone on to successful careers in Primary Care, Hospital Medicine and Medical Subspecialties. Many have joined successful practices right here at Lutheran General and others are practicing across the United States.

We are a large level 1 Trauma Center serving a diverse patient population. In addition to our allopathic Internal Medicine Residency we also offer an AOA Residency path. We are dually accredited by the ACGME and AOA. We also have accredited fellowships in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and Hematology/Oncology. Our Medical Staff faculty are committed to teaching and are successful practicing physicians with many years of "real world" experience.

The Residency in Internal Medicine at Lutheran General Hospital is uniquely positioned to train well-rounded exceptional Internists. Our advantage is outpatient training. At Lutheran General, the Nesset Pavillion provides an outstanding opportunity to learn and practice outpatient medicine. The skills learned in this continuity experience will be vitally important to all Internal Medicine physicians in their carreers. Clearly, General Internists need a solid foundation in office practice. However, Hospitalists also need to understand outpatient medicine to communicate with community based colleagues to provide seamless care for their patients. Subspecialists also benefit from this solid foundation in Primary Care. Many graduates of the program who have gone on to successful Subspecialty careers have told me how invaluable to their clinical practices these formative skills have been.

I hope we at Lutheran General fit into your postgraduate training plans. If you have any questions or would like more information about our Program please do not hesitate to contact me.
