Special Services and Therapies

The Center for Developmental Pediatrics
Lutheran General Children's Hospital offers one of the largest and most comprehensive pediatric developmental programs in Illinois for children with complex developmental disorders. Children with developmental disabilities have many unique and diverse needs, so we bring together specialty and primary care physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, psychologists, and other experts at one site to offer evaluation, treatment and follow-up care.

Many of the clinics offer services rarely available elsewhere. Specialized clinics include:

In addition, there are many other special programs that complement our broad range of treatment services and clinical care such as:

  • The Pediatric Primary Care Center—Primary pediatric care for health supervision, developmental and behavioral problems, and acute and chronic illnesses in infants, children and adolescents
  • Healthy Steps Program—Nurturing the physical, emotional and intellectual growth and development of children from birth to age 3

Pediatric Rehabilitation and Audiology Services
Specialists at Lutheran General Children's Hospital provide diagnostic and therapeutic treatment to infants, children and adolescents with neurologic, orthopedic, congenital or developmental conditions. Our team of caregivers includes specially trained and credentialed pediatric physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language therapists and audiologists. We also offer care through the Lekotek Center, a family play center and toy-lending library designed for children with disabilities, chronic illness or developmental delays.

Children's Health Resource Center
To help parents and family members become more actively involved with the health care team in managing their child's health condition, we offer a comprehensive resource center providing the most current information on an extensive array of health care topics and resources, including:

  • Books
  • Videos
  • Interactive CD-ROMs
  • Software
  • Guided Internet access
  • Professional journals
  • And more

The center is home to the Metric Pediatric Library, featuring a collection of resources on a wide range of pediatric health, wellness and illness topics; and the Emily Dorfman Learning Center, a hands-on learning experience for children, using teaching dolls, medical equipment, interactive games and more.

The Children's Health Resource Center also offers a variety of education and parenting classes, a community health education lecture series and numerous support groups.

Pre-Surgical Tour
Parents and families play an important role in the care of a sick child. We make every effort to integrate the child's family into the surgical management process and to provide a supportive, healing environment. The pre-surgical tour gives children ages 3-9, and family an opportunity to visit the operating room and meet with staff prior to a scheduled procedure. This special tour allows children to become more familiar and comfortable with the surgical environment and experience, helping ease their anxiety.
