"Teenlounge Programs"

Child Life A separate Teen Life Program is offered for patients ages ten to twenty-one. This program is designed to meet the developmental needs of adolescents and encourages emotional expression and social interaction. Teens and young adults are invited to hang out in the teen lounge and take advantage of numerous recreational activities offered in teenlounge and at bedside: Click here for a list of our charitable sponsors and to find out how you can help support Child and Teen Life programs.

“Get Acquainted Night” (Weekly)
“Get Acquainted Night” promotes communication and socialization among patients. The program gives participants an opportunity to meet and share feelings, concerns and questions with each other. New friendships forged during these get-togethers can be further developed throughout hospitalization and after.

“Teens Talk to Teens” Book (Daily)
The “Teens Talk to Teens” book is a shared notebook journal kept in the Teen Lounge. It allows patients to express thoughts, feelings or personal hospital experiences they might not otherwise be able to share with others. Patients who read the journal are comforted in the knowledge that they are not alone in their feelings or experiences.

Computer Access (Daily)
PC Pal, one of the Starlight programs, helps adolescent patients feel “connected” while in the hospital. PC Pals are mobile personal computers that travel easily from room to room, providing educational, entertainment and communication opportunities to patients. Computers feature state-of-the-art flat screen monitors, custom-designed software and filtered Internet access. Computers are also located in the teen lounge. Each patient room has internet access.

Game Time (Daily)
Games offer fun-filled diversions for patients and families. They encourage social interaction and serve as an impetus for patients’ getting to know one another and make new friends. The game cabinet, located in the teen lounge, offers a large selection of games from which to chose, including: cards, board games and social interactive games.

Crafts (Daily)
Craft workshops offered through the Teen Life program serve as outlets for creative expression of emotion. As patients relax and use their imagination, feelings regarding their illness or hospitalization are more freely communicated. Adolescents can complete structured projects or choose to make their own creations.

Cooking Activities (Weekly)
Cooking activities offer teens an opportunity to learn a new skill, adapt to diet restrictions and take a break from hospital food. Recipes are prepared by teen patients.

Puppy Therapy (Twice monthly)
Animals have been shown to have therapeutic value for patients of all ages. In puppy therapy, a dedicated volunteer brings healthy puppies from a community pet store to the adolescent unit for regular visits. This delightful program offers many benefits: Puppies aid physical and emotional recovery in young patients by encouraging interaction; puppies provide an incentive to return to routine behaviors and activities; playful pups also motivate as well as stimulate differently abled teens and young adults to work on skills, and aid in the development of social skills for all patients.

Horticulture Therapy (Weekly)
Horticulture therapy brings the healing elements of nature indoors. It provides physical and psychological value to young patients while enhancing the hospital environment. Adolescents enjoy nurturing potted plants and completing seasonal projects using natural materials, such as making flower arrangements or designing wreaths. These projects can then be taken home with the patients upon discharge.

Humor Cart (Weekly)
Child and Teen Life offer humor therapy, a unique program in which child and adolescent patients and their families are amused by the antics of colorfully dressed volunteers, as they travel from room to room throughout the pediatric and adolescent units and outpatient clinics. Volunteers use a special selection of funny jokes, silly games, goofy gags and gimmicks to elicit smiles, giggles and belly laughs. Specially trained LGCH volunteers also affiliated with Jewish Women International offer this program for our patients. For more information about this program call 847.723.8697

“Picture Me” Photography Program (Quarterly)
“Picture Me” is a unique photography program offered at Lutheran General Children’s Hospital. The goal of this program is to enhance self-esteem and positive body image in adolescent patients despite illness or injury. Professional photographers involved in the program engage patients in delightful situations in an effort to capture outer images that reflect the beauty of the inner self.

Smudge Art Therapy Group(Monthly)
Smudge Art Therapy gives adolescent patients the opportunity to examine their feelings and explore the hospital environment through artistic expression, in both individual and group settings. Led by an art therapist, this activity provides an outlet for fears and concerns related to an illness or hospital stay.

Unique Entertainment(Monthly)
From time to time, the pediatric and adolescent units are treated to special performances sponsored by generous community members, groups and organizations. These performances brighten our holidays as well as add cheer throughout the year. Past entertainment has included visits from school groups, theater groups, celebrities, personal groups, etc.

Starlight Starbright Entertainment(Monthly)
The Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation sponsors a monthly magic show at Lutheran General Children’s Hospital. The one-hour show offers a light-hearted diversion for adolescent patients and their families. The show’s magician also performs personal magic shows for patients unable to leave their rooms.

Theme Dinners(Quarterly)
Theme dinners are special events held in the Teen Lounge, complete with decorations and party favors. Various holiday themes and special theme times are offered periodically for patients and their families throughout the year.

Health Career Night Adolescents and young adults are invited to attend this free community event to learn more about the many careers in health care, talk with professionals who work in various health-related fields and obtain information about educational requirements. To learn more about Health Career Nights, contact Jan Welter at 847-723-TEEN (8336) or Jan.Welter@advocatehealth.com.

Community Involvement
