Internship Schedule Child Life internships are offered three times a year, beginning in January, May and September. Internships are full time positions (40 hours a week) for a period of 16 weeks. Scheduled hours vary. Intern coverage includes some evenings, weekend and holiday coverage. During the adolescent unit rotation, interns are required to work Monday evenings, though there is some flexibility in scheduling. The Child Life program accepts up to 3 full time interns per internship session. The Child Life program also accepts part time student interns, practicum students, and students needing course credit. Rotation OverviewThe Child Life internship is designed to provide a full range of experiences with hospitalized children and adolescents under the supervision of a certified Child Life specialist. Individual weekly objectives are determined at the onset of the internship. Following a two-week orientation, rotations are scheduled. As part of the internship, each intern will complete one full month of responsibility for pediatric programming. This includes planning and implementation of daily playroom group activities for patients ranging in age from infant through nine years. An additional four weeks of the program are dedicated to meeting the needs of the adolescent unit’s patients, ages 10 to 21 years. Other rotations are offered as personal choice selections. Interns may choose to expand their knowledge of a specific developmental stage, or provide coverage in outpatient clinics or specialized treatment areas such as the emergency room, surgery area or Family Resource Center. The comprehensive scope of the internship provides opportunities aimed at developing professional excellence. The goal of the program is to enable interns to assume the role and responsibilities of a Child Life specialist, and make the successful transition from student to professional. |
