Patient education is a key element in assisting patients and families feel more at ease about upcoming medical procedures and hospital stays. Child Life specialists work with the medical staff to provide essential information and to familiarize patients and families with medical facilities. Among the many areas of patient education provided by Child Life staff are:
The Child Life program provides family members with information that will assist them in supporting their child and in actively participating in their child’s health care. Click on the links below for some helpful tips.
Children’s Health Resource Center The Children’s Health Resource Center is a comprehensive reference library of the most current health materials available. The center makes it possible for patients and family members to learn about wellness, health conditions, treatment options and resources available to them. The library also offers educational programs, lecture series and support groups. Care Pages Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital can help you use the Advocate Web site to communicate with friends and family about patients at Lutheran General Children's Hospital. Our free Care Page service lets you create or visit a unique web page for a child who is hospitalized. Lekotek Center With a toy-lending library and family play sessions, our Lekotek Center emphasizes fun and enjoyment for children 0-8 years of age with any type of disability, through discovery play and exploration. Emily Dorfman Learning Center The Emily Dorfman Learning Center is an interactive learning environment that allows children and adolescents to learn about their health or the medical care they are receiving, using teaching dolls, medical supplies, games and computer programs. Starbright World Computer System The Starbright World computer system is a private online community connecting more than 30,000 kids living with chronic and serious illness. Kids can chat, e-mail, read bulletin boards, find friends, learn about health care conditions, surf web sites and play games, all in a private and safe environment just for them. Starbright World can be accessed by registered users from hundreds of homes and nearly 100 children's hospitals across North America. This program is sponsored through community donations. For more information on Starbright World, visit here. PC Pal PC Pals are personal computers generously donated through the Starlight Children’s Foundation to help meet the educational, entertainment and communication needs of young hospitalized patients. These mobile computers, equipped with custom-designed software and filtered Internet access, travel from room to room allowing patients to connect to the Internet, play their favorite games, do their homework and chat on-line with friends and family. To learn more about the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the PC Pal, visit here. All patient rooms have internet access. Game Systems Fun Centers Fun Center units are portable game systems donated through the Starlight Children’s Foundation. These units are very popular with our pediatric and adolescent patients, especially those on bed rest. They provide entertainment and distraction from feelings of isolation or pain that can accompany a hospital stay.
