Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

The pediatric cardiovascular surgery program located at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital offers the latest in surgical treatment for congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease for children of all ages, from newborns to adolescents.

An Experienced Medical Team
Led by renowned, experienced cardiovascular surgeons, the cardiovascular surgery team comprises highly skilled pediatric surgeons trained at leading-edge medical institutions, as well as dedicated physician assistants and nurses with advanced training in the care of children with cardiovascular disorders.

Specialized Care
Cardiovascular surgeons on staff at Lutheran General Children’s Hospital have extensive cardiovascular surgical experience. In fact, each year, these physicians perform nearly half of all pediatric cardiovascular surgical procedures in the Chicagoland area. Expansive surgical capabilities covering the full scope of cardiac conditions, include:

  • Neonatal cardiac surgery: newborns with complex lesions, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and various types of transposition of the great arteries are routinely treated. Primary repair is usually performed to avoid multiple procedures, regardless of weight and age. Early and accurate diagnosis before the baby is born contributes to the positive surgical results.
  • Surgery for complex lesions in children (beyond infancy) includes innovative approaches that aim to give children a long-lasting cure, reducing further surgical intervention and providing a normal lifestyle.
  • Support of the failing heart and lung with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is used when other therapies have failed. It allows the heart and lung to recover from acute failure, or prepares the patient for cardiac transplantation.
  • Surgery, in conjunction with highly specialized cardiac electrophysiology procedures for abnormal heart rhythm, supplements the excellent medical therapies available.
State-of-the-art Facilities
Pediatric cardiovascular surgery is performed in state-of-the-art surgical suites, equipped with sophisticated monitoring devices and surgical instrumentation. Following surgery, children recover in the pediatric intensive care unit where they are monitored and cared for by specially trained nurses and other medical personnel. Select family members are allowed to be with the child during this time in recovery.

A Continuum of Care
In addition to high quality surgical care, Lutheran General Children’s Hospital offers a complete continuum of cardiovascular care, from pre- and post-operative consultation to rehabilitation, along with a comprehensive range of subspecialty and outpatient services. Specialty clinics are conveniently located in the Yacktman Children’s Pavilion—a child-friendly outpatient facility adjoining the hospital.
