Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital is widely recognized as one of the leading hospitals for children with heart disease. Children of all ages who require surgical care rely on the experienced surgeons, nurses and other medical personnel whom are dedicated exclusively to caring for children. Renowned physicians offer the latest in surgical treatment of congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease for children of all ages, from newborns with complex heart conditions to adolescents.

Many physicians involved in the pediatric cardiovascular surgery program at Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital are part of The Heart Institute for Children, one of the largest independent pediatric cardiovascular surgery programs in Illinois. The Institute provides the highest level of surgical intervention for children and adults requiring ongoing treatment for congenital and acquired heart disease.

An Experienced Medical Team
Led by some of the most distinguished physicians in cardiovascular care, the cardiovascular surgery program's medical team comprises pediatric surgeons trained at leading-edge medical institutions, as well as physician assistants and nurses with advanced training in the care of children with cardiovascular disorders.

Specialized Care
The Heart Institute for Children's cardiovascular surgeons have extensive cardiovascular surgical experience. In fact, each year, The Institute's physicians perform nearly half of all pediatric cardiovascular surgical procedures in the Chicagoland area. Expansive surgical capabilities covering the full scope of cardiac conditions, include:

  • Neonatal cardiac surgery: newborns with complex lesions, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and various types of transposition of the great arteries are routinely treated. Primary repair is usually performed to avoid multiple procedures, regardless of weight and age. Early and accurate diagnosis before the baby is born contributes to the positive surgical results.
  • Surgery for complex lesions in children (beyond infancy) includes innovative approaches that aim to give children a long-lasting cure, reducing further surgical intervention and providing a normal lifestyle.
  • Support of the failing heart and lung with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is used when other therapies have failed. It allows the heart and lung to recover from acute failure, or prepares the patient for cardiac transplantation.
  • Surgery, in conjunction with highly specialized cardiac electrophysiology procedures for abnormal heart rhythm, supplements the excellent medical therapies available.

State-of-the-art Facilities
Pediatric surgery is performed in state-of-the-art surgical suites, equipped with sophisticated monitoring devices and surgical instrumentation. Following surgery, children recover in the pediatric intensive care unit where they are monitored and cared for by specially trained nurses and other medical personnel. Select family members are allowed to be with the child during this time in recovery.

A Continuum of Care
In addition to high quality cardiovascular surgical care, Lutheran General Children's Hospital offers a complete continuum of cardiovascular care, from pre- and post-operative pediatric cardiology consultation to rehabilitation, along with a comprehensive range of subspecialty and outpatient services. Many outpatient clinics are conveniently housed in the Yacktman Children's Pavilion—a child-friendly outpatient facility adjoining the hospital.
