Assignment Opportunities

The following is a partial list of volunteer assignments currently available at Lutheran General Hospital. The areas listed may not be available at the time of a volunteer's interview. However, new opportunities arise continuously.

Training is required in all areas of service. After training, volunteers must contribute at least four hours, one day a week, for a period of at least six months. We try to place each volunteer in an area that matches his or her skills and interests. These areas include:

Patient Services
This area is ideal for people who enjoy interacting with others. Volunteers might deliver mail and flowers to patient rooms, visit with patients, or provide wheelchair assistance to patients.

Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital offers volunteers the opportunity to provide play activities to help pediatric patients and parents cope.

Guest Services
This area requires friendly volunteers with warm social skills to interact with visitors and staff. Volunteers work at points-of-entry, greeting, escorting and directing visitors. Guest Service volunteers provide assistance to families waiting in the emergency department, surgical family waiting area, and critical care waiting areas. Guest Service volunteers also work at our hospitals main information desks answering patient information phone calls and directing visitors. These volunteers also provide wheelchair assistance.

Clerical Services
Volunteers with office skills and experience have the opportunity to do general clerical work, typing, data entry, mailings and much more.

Gift Shop / Flower Shop
Volunteers staff the Gift and Flower Shops, which serve patients, families and hospital associates. All profits from the gift and flower shops are returned to Lutheran General Hospital for the care of patients. Volunteers may be asked to assist customers in selecting merchandise, operate cash registers or assist with merchandise displays.

Special Services
Volunteers have an opportunity to work on special projects and events that require less time commitment.
