We offer volunteer positions in over 80 hospital departments. The opportunities described below are for general reference only. If you don’t see an opportunity that may interest you, please let us know what you are looking for. We do our best to match the position with your interests and preferences.
Opportunities and their availability change frequently. Not all opportunities described below may be available when you apply. Please make a note – the majority of openings are available Mon-Fri 8am-4pm. Evening and weekend opportunities become available less frequently.

R – Regular program opportunities
Patient Services areas - depending on the specific department, volunteer tasks may involve assisting our patients through activities such as wheelchair service, providing conversation, sterilizing carts, walking family members to surgical waiting areas, passing fresh water and magazines. Examples: Transportation department, nursing units, pre-surgery department, ambulatory surgery, GI department, radiology etc.
Blues Busters - You will be busting our patients’ blues by delivering magazines to their bedside. A wonderful opportunity for those not afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger. A perfect fit for students interested in healthcare careers and looking to polish their interpersonal skills so vital to all healthcare professionals. Blues Busters volunteers often volunteer in pairs so join with a friend or a partner will be assigned to you.
Guest Services area - make a lasting first impression by walking our patients and visitors to their destination. Very busy opportunity that involves a lot of walking, occasionally pushing a wheelchair or a cart, yet it’s very fulfilling and rewarding. Just imagine hearing a customer thank you for taking your time to show them their way around. You are their hero for the day! It's a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy meeting new people and don't mind spending their volunteer shift walking and standing. Examples: information desks, lobbies, waiting rooms, registration desks etc.
Patient Care Equipment and Medical Supply Deliveries - our clinicians need equipment and supplies to care for our patients and your role will be to help deliver those items to nursing units. Fast-paced opportunity in a dynamic department. Perfect for those who like the challenge of learning a lot in a short period of time and getting to know the whole hospital.
Food and Nutrition - come and join our amazing food and nutrition department team. Your role will be to assist in one of our industrial kitchens with food prep, tray line, delivering carts/trays to our nursing units, or keeping our dining rooms organized and neat as well as serving meals to our many guests in our Top Deck Cafeteria. And a special perk – all Food and Nutrition department volunteers receive a $5 meal ticket each day they volunteer.
Flower Shop - you will be surrounded by beautiful flowers and enticing fragrances as you assist customers in our Flower Shop. You will be helping with merchandise selections, using the cash register to process payments, answering phones to take orders, delivering flowers to patients as well as restocking merchandise and helping with the upkeep of the shop.
Gift Shop - an amazing selection of thousands of beautiful items requires an expert to help customers select the perfect gift for their loved ones and this will be your role! In addition, you will be helping with merchandise checkout, restocking and delivering items to patients. If you are an outgoing and energetic person who likes interacting with others, you will enjoy this opportunity.
Clerical opportunities - volunteering in an office-type setting providing services such as labeling, stuffing envelopes, filing, answering phones, computer data entry. Depending on the requirements of a specific department, the tasks may range from simple clerical tasks to more complex data-entry duties. These opportunities are available Mon-Fri 8am-5pm only.
Research Assistant with the James R. & Helen D. Russell Institute for Research and Innovation - assisting our research staff and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital investigators with services encompassing the medical research field. Some of the duties include data collection and data entry, develop and maintain databases, conduct literature search. Some experience or background in the research field is highly recommended for applicants interested in the volunteer research assistant position. The volunteer(s) will be asked to work in an office-type setting providing services such as: labeling, stuffing envelopes, filing; extracting and entering data and information into Microsoft Access Databases or Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The volunteer(s) could be asked to perform a literature search on a project topic, create a range of databases with existing or collected data and if necessary, present the data to the assigned mentor/investigator. There is no patient contact/observation associated with this opportunity.
